New Delhi: A 30-year-old woman from Unnao tried to die by suicide by immolating herself over a family dispute in Vikramaditya Marg area of Lucknow on Tuesday. She has been admitted to the hospital in a critical condition, police said.

According to some reports, the woman tried to kill herself by self-immolation as she was not heard in the CM’s ‘Janata Darbar’. She had been reportedly running from pillar to post for many days to get justice but in vain. She tried to die by suicide while keeping her 2-year-old child on the side. Interestingly, no ‘Janta Darbar’ was held on Tuesday.

Samajwadi Party (SP) supremo Akhilesh Yadav alleged that the woman tried to die by suicide because of frustration after she was not given a hearing in the Chief Minister’s ‘Janata Darbar’. However, an officer overseeing the arrangements for the Janata Darbar program said that the woman did not come to the programme in the first place, according to a report in NBT.

According to the report, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central Zone) Raveena Tyagi said that a woman attempted to die by suicide by pouring some flammable liquid on herself on Vikramaditya Marg in Gautam Palli police station area. He added the cops present doused the fire with great difficulty and admitted her to Dr Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Civil Hospital, Lucknow. The woman has reportedly suffered 90 percent burns and is being treated.

He said that prima facie it seems that she took the extreme step over a family dispute. According to sources, the woman was identified as Anjali Jatav, who had accused her husband and her in-laws of harassment. Unnao district administration had asked for action in the case. On Monday, the accused husband and his brother were arrested.

Akhilesh Yadav turns heat on government

SP President Akhilesh Yadav turned the heat on the government over the issue.

In a post on social media platform X in Hindi, he wrote, “Another shocking incident of public’s disappointment in the BJP government happened when a victimised woman who had reached the Chief Minister’s ‘Janta Darbar’ in Lucknow, frustrated by the failure to be heard, committed suicide by sitting her infant child on the side. For BJP, the public is just a voter. For BJP, the end of elections means the end of concern for the public. There should be sympathy for the woman and the best possible treatment should be provided to save her life. The woman’s family and the public should keep an eye on her, lest the BJP government takes some secret action against the woman if she commits self-immolation as a protest against the failure of the BJP government.”
