New Delhi: A city court on Wednesday (December 18) granted seven-day interim bail to former Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) student Umar Khalid seeking bail in the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) case related to the alleged larger conspiracy behind the 2020 Delhi riots.
Additional Sessions Judge Sameer Bajpai granted the relief to Khalid with several conditions to attend a wedding in the family.
What conditions court imposed on Khalid?
The court, while granting seven-day interim bail to Khalid, directed him to not contact any witness and any person connected with the case, to not use social media during the seven-day interim bail period, to meet only his family members, relatives and friends and to stay at his home or at the places where the marriage ceremonies will take place.
The court has directed Khalid to surrender before the jail authorities in the evening of January 3 next year.
Khalid’s appeal against dismissal of second regular bail plea is pending before High Court
The Delhi High Court denied Khalid bail in the case in October 2022 and he challenged the High Court order before the Supreme Court. However, he later withdrew his plea from the top court and filed a second regular bail plea before the trial court, which rejected his plea earlier this year. His appeal against the dismissal of his second regular bail plea is currently pending before the High Court.
Delhi Police arrested Khalid in September 2020 in 2020 Delhi riots case
The Delhi Police arrested Khalid in September 2020 in the 2020 Delhi riots case and he, along with Sharjeel Imam and several others, was booked under the provisions of the UAPA and various other sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) for allegedly being the “masterminds” of the February 2020 Delhi riots in the national capital in which 53 persons lost their lives and over 700 were injured.
