New Delhi: Former Delhi Chief Minister and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) supremo Arvind Kejriwal on Sunday wrote a letter to the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) alleging intimidation and harassment by the BJP on his party workers. Referring to an incident on Saturday, he added one of the party’s senior volunteers was detained by the police on ‘baseless’ allegations. He also alleged that several AAP workers were assaulted by the BJP over the last month.
“I am writing to express my grave concern over the intimidation and harassment being meted out to our grass-root volunteers in the New Delhi Assembly Constituency at the hands of BJP workers and Delhi Police in the run-up to election day,” The Former Chief Minister wrote. He added, “Yesterday, our senior volunteer Chetan (Resident of Princess Park Part-2) was unlawfully detained and booked under section 126 of BNSS, 2023 at Tilak Marg Police Station, on the baseless and fictitious grounds that he has previous cases registered against him, while there are none.
AAP volunteer was framed: Arvind Kejriwal
Claiming that the volunteer was charged with actions that were never committed, Kejriwal said that Chetan faced physical abuse from the police so much that he fainted, after which he was rushed to Lady Harding Hospital. “Later on, after a lot of struggle, he was produced before the Return Officer/ SDM concerned and granted bail, in a matter in which he was brazenly framed,” the letter read further.
Ex-CM talks about several incidents
Pointing out that it was not an isolated incident, Kejriwal also wrote about some of the incidents over the last month alleging how his party workers were harassed by the BJP. “On the evening of 27th January, Sonam received threats from an individual named Mr. Dabas from Mundka. This incident happened in Kidwai Nagar (East) Slums.”
Mentioning another incident, he wrote, “Our senior volunteer Bunty was threatened at BR Camp by a BJP worker who identified himself as Anil Soni. He warned Bunty that he would be “picked up” and false cases would be filed against him. Subsequently, he was illegally detained and kept in police custody for a day, necessitating the intervention of AAP MP Sanjay Singh for his release.”
