New Delhi: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is all set to form the government in Delhi after winning 48 of the 70 Assembly seats in Delhi. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) which was looking to win its fourth Assembly election, won the remaining 22 seats.
A number of bigwigs from AAP lost the Assembly elections, the results of which were announced on Saturday. Among those who lost their elections included AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal, Manish Sisodia, Somnath Bharti, and Saurabh Bharadwaj among others.
Bharadwaj lost against a little-known BJP candidate Shikha Roy from the Greater Kailash seat. As per the Election Commission, Roy defeated Bharadwaj by a margin of 3,188 votes. While Roy got 49, 504 votes, Bharadwaj got 46,406 votes. Among other candidates, a candidate who contested against Roy and Bhaardwaj was Congress Garvit Singhvi.
Who is Shikha Roy?
A two-time councilor, Shikha Roy was a surprise pick by the BJP against Bharadwaj in the constituency. According to the MyNeta portal, the 60-year-old is an advocate by profession. She did her LLB from the Department of Law, Punjab University, Chandigarh, followed by a Master in Arts (MA) from the government college in Ludhiana, from the same university. Roy has assets of more than 16 crore and liabilities of over Rs 3 crore. Roy also held several important positions in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD). Among the posts held by her included the chairperson of the standing committee.
When was the Greater Kailash constituency established?
The Greater Kailash constituency was established in 2008 after a delimitation. The constituency was initially represented by BJP’s VK Malhotra who was its first MLA. The constituency soon became a stronghold for AAP, with Bharadwaj winning the 2013, 2015, and 2020 elections. Among these wins was a massive 16,809-vote win against Roy in the 2020 Assembly Elections.
