New Delhi: Former Delhi Chief Minister and AAP convenor Arvind Kejriwal has written to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, seeking a meeting to address pressing concerns regarding the law and order situation in the capital. In his letter, Kejriwal raised alarms over the deteriorating safety conditions, noting that although law and order in Delhi fall under the jurisdiction of the central government, the city is increasingly being labeled as the “crime capital” on both national and international platforms.
He referred to troubling statistics, such as Delhi’s position at the top for crimes against women and murder rates among 19 major metro cities in India. Kejriwal also highlighted the growing menace of extortion gangs, bomb threats targeting airports and schools, and a dramatic 350 percent surge in drug-related crimes. These issues, according to Kejriwal, have contributed to heightened security concerns for the city’s residents.
‘Rising crime plaguing Delhi’
In his letter to Home Minister Shah, Kejriwal wrote, “Delhi’s law and order is under the Central Government, but Delhi is now being known as the capital of crime.” Kejriwal wrote, “While crimes against women are rapidly increasing in Delhi, extortion gangs and gangsters have become active in every street. The drug mafia has spread its influence throughout Delhi.
“Delhi is also number one in cases of murder. Since 2019, drug-related crimes in Delhi have increased by 350%. In the last six months, over 300 schools and colleges, more than 100 hospitals, airports, and malls in Delhi have continuously received bomb threats, ” he wrote.
