New Delhi: Delhi High Court on Friday (January 24) refused to direct a special sitting of Delhi Legislative Assembly to table various Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) reports on governance.
Justice Sachin Datta, who earlier reserved verdict on a plea by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLAs, however, said that there was an inordinate delay on the part of the Delhi government in tabling the CAG reports.
“The court is not inclined to accept the prayer of the petitioner to summon a special sitting of the assembly,” the High Court said.
BJP MLAs moved High Court last year
BJP MLAs – Vijender Gupta, Mohan Singh Bisht, Om Prakash Sharma, Ajay Kumar Mahawar, Abhay Verma, Anil Kumar Bajpai and Jitendra Mahajan – filed the plea before the High Court last year seeking a direction to the Delhi Assembly Speaker to call a sitting of the Delhi assembly for the purpose of tabling of the CAG reports.
BJP MLAs accused AAP-led Delhi government of delaying tabling CAG reports
The BJP MLAs accused the Aam Aadmi Party-led Delhi government of delaying in tabling the CAG reports and argued that in view of the upcoming Delhi assembly elections, placing of the CAG reports in the assembly was even more pertinent.
Delhi Speaker, city government opposed plea
The counsels appearing for the Delhi Speaker and the city government opposed the passing of a direction by the court in the matter, saying there was no urgency to table the CAG reports at this stage when the Delhi assembly elections were to be held soon.
The High Court, while hearing the matter earlier on January 13 had said that the CAG reports should have been placed before the Delhi assembly for discussion and had remarked that the Delhi government was dragging its feet on tabling the CAG reports raised doubts on its bonafides.
