Dehradun: Following public resentment and media attention to the speed breakers on Dehradun roads, the Public Works Department has acknowledged the accidents caused by these bump speed breakers. The Uttarakhand PWD secretary has sought clarification from the engineer responsible for their construction.

On December 12, PWD Secretary Dr. Pankaj Kumar Pandey issued a formal letter, noting that media reports have highlighted the construction of speed breakers in Dehradun without adhering to traffic rules and standards, causing inconvenience and potential accidents.

PWD secretary Dr. Pandey asked on whose orders the speed breakers were constructed and why public concerns and safety standards were not addressed. He demanded immediate clarification and necessary action.

Local residents reported seven accidents in a single day around Clock Tower due to the newly built speed breakers, which lacked warning boards or indicators. Two passengers were seriously injured, including a three-year-old child who was thrown from a bike when it hit a bump speed breaker.

Following the construction of speed breakers in several parts of the city, the absence of alert signs has led to frequent accidents. Afterwards, secretary-level officials ensured white markings were added to the speed breakers and signboards were put up. District Magistrate Savin Bansal stated that the speed breakers were installed for road safety by Smart City. An investigation into any negligence regarding the speed breakers is underway, with further action to follow based on the findings.
