Dehradun: Following the horrific Monday night road accident which claimed six lives of youths, including three girls, in Dehradun city, the district administration has swung into action. Dehradun district magistrate Savin Bansal, who is also chairman of the district road safety committee, has directed the authorities concerned of the transport department to suggest ways to put a check on such accidents in future.
The divisional transport officer (Enforcement) Shailesh Tewari has constituted a 3-member committee to examine the safety arrangements at all accident-prone sites in Dehradun city. The committee, headed by assistant divisional transport officer (enforcement) accommodates two transport officers (enforcement) of Rishikesh and Vikashnagar. The committee will submit a report to the district road safety committee within 15 days.
The committee will analyse the road accidents which took place in the city since January this year
The committee has been tasked to analyse all the road accidents which took place in the city since January this year. In its report, it will suggest improvement measures to be taken at the accident-prone sites. The committee will also identify the sites of frequent road accidents. Besides, the committee will pay attention to the timing of road accidents in the city’s different areas. It will help the administration make proper checking arrangements during such periods.
Over-speeding is a major reason behind road accidents
As per the transport department, a major reason behind road accidents is over-speeding. The transport department took actions against 2625 vehicles for over-speeding between January to September months. Dehradun district registered 435 road accidents till October this year.
Growing culture of clubbing in Dehradun
Since Dehradun is also a prominent tourist spot, several vehicles enter the city from different parts of the country. Besides, there is a growing culture of clubbing in the city which has a high number of students because of the presence of several educational institutions.
Poor safety arrangement at accident-prone sites
The Monday Road accident has apparently not only exposed the poor safety arrangements at the accident-prone sites, but also put a question mark on the night-checking arrangements of the police and the transport department.
