New Delhi: A weather system over the west-central and northwest Bay of Bengal is intensifying and expected to develop into a deep depression, leading to heavy rainfall warnings for Odisha, West Bengal, Andhra Pradesh, and Chhattisgarh.
According to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), the depression is moving at a speed of 17 kmph and was located around 270 km east of Kalingapatnam in Andhra Pradesh, 210 km east-southeast of Gopalpur in Odisha, 230 km south-southeast of Paradip in Odisha, and 370 km south of Digha in West Bengal as of 11:30 am.
Odisha, West Bengal coasts on alert
The weather system is predicted to move northward toward the north Odisha-West Bengal coasts and is expected to strengthen into a deep depression within the next 24 hours. It is forecast to make landfall between Puri in Odisha and Digha in West Bengal around noon on September 9. Following landfall, the system is likely to move further inland, affecting Odisha, Gangetic West Bengal, Jharkhand and north Chhattisgarh in the next two days, The Hindustan Times reported.
Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam may receive light to moderate rainfall and some areas experiencing heavy to very heavy rainfall on September 8-9, with the possibility of extremely heavy downpours at isolated locations.
Odisha is also bracing for heavy to very heavy rainfall on September 9, with isolated locations potentially seeing extremely heavy rainfall. The state can expect continued heavy rainfall through September 11, which prompted the IMD to issue a red alert in five districts, as rainfall has already begun in several parts. Chhattisgarh is preparing for heavy rainfall in the southern region today, with the northern parts expected to receive heavy rainfall on September 9-10.
Warning for eastern, central India
Telangana is forecast to have light to moderate rainfall in many areas, with isolated spots experiencing heavy to very heavy rainfall on September 8-9. In Gangetic West Bengal, light to moderate rainfall is expected, along with heavy to very heavy rainfall in isolated areas on September 9-10, continuing through September 12.
Southern Jharkhand is expected to experience heavy to very heavy rainfall from September 10-11, with isolated heavy showers possible on September 9 and 12. Vidarbha is also predicted to receive light to moderate rainfall, with heavy to very heavy precipitation at isolated locations on September 9.
