New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s upcoming visit to France, which will take place from February 10 to February 12, is likely to result in a number of important announcements in the defence sector, including small modular reactors (SMR) and aircraft maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO).
According to sources to TV9 Network, both sides may also announce an agreement on 26 Rafale-M fighter aircraft for the Indian Navy. In addition, India and France may announce an agreement on three Scorpene class submarines, which is in the final stages. Importantly, the total cost of both these deals is close to $10-11 billion.
Discussions likely on 110 KN aero engines
Both sides may also discuss the co-design and co-development of 110 KN aero engines for India’s Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA). The emphasise will likely be on the ‘Make in India’ initiative and technology transfer in defense deals during the visit.
During his visit, the PM will co-chair the AI Action Summit with French President Emmanuel Macron and also participate in bilateral talks. This will be his sixth visit to France since assuming office in 2014. India and France may also discuss the roadmap for Artificial Intelligence (AI).
Special focus on India-Middle East-Europe Corridor
Along with cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region, the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC) will also be a major focus of bilateral talks. France is the only major country to appoint a special envoy for this corridor.
Meanwhile, French company Safran, which manufactures engines for Rafale and Mirage-2000 aircraft, will participate in the Aero India Show held in Bengaluru. The company has 17 facilities and more than 2400 employees in India. Safran has also established MRO facilities in India for helicopter and commercial engines.
After concluding this France visit, the PM will then proceed to the US on a two-day visit. This will be his first official visit to the country, since President Donald Trump’s return to the Oval Office in Washington.
