Chennai: Doordarshan’s Tamil division, DD Tamil, has stirred controversy with its Hindi month celebrations, sparking opposition from the public and Tamil enthusiasts. The celebrations, culminating in today’s closing ceremony, feature Tamil Nadu Governor RN Ravi as the special guest.
DD Tamil’s rebranding from Podhigai in January this year, launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has been met with criticism. The logo change to saffron has also raised eyebrows. Critics argue that the promotions undermine Tamil language and culture.
Controversy Surrounds DD Tamil’s Hindi Month Celebrations, Governor RN Ravi to Join
“The Union BJP government, which has repeatedly offended the sentiments of the Tamil people, has not only changed the TV named Potikai to DD Tamil but is planning to keep Tamil in name and broadcast their narrow-minded Hindi stuff through the same TV. They will not accept. The Tamil Nadu Congress Committee strongly condemns Governor RN Ravi, who will participate as a special guest in the celebration of Hindi Month by the Union BJP Government,” Tamil Nadu Congress Committee president K Selvaperunthagai said.
The closing ceremony, scheduled for October 18 at TV Station Arena-1, has invited widespread criticism. Many view the celebrations as an imposition of Hindi, fueling existing tensions. DD Tamil’s decision to prioritize Hindi month celebrations has left many questioning the role of regional television channels in promoting local languages.
Tamil Nadu has historically been sensitive to language politics, and this move has reignited debates on language promotion and cultural identity. The event has sparked heated discussions on social media, with many expressing disappointment and concern over the perceived marginalization of Tamil.
Governor RN Ravi’s participation in the ceremony has also drawn attention, given the ongoing tensions between the Governor’s office and the state government. As the controversy unfolds, it remains to be seen how DD Tamil will address the concerns of its audience and the larger Tamil community.
