New Delhi: Madhya Pradesh police have apprehended a group of beggars in Indore who had traveled to state from Rajasthan. The group of 22 individuals, which includes 11 children, begs throughout the day and rests in a hotel at night. The police have sent this group back to Rajasthan.
An official from the Women and Child Development Department provided this information on Wednesday. The official said that following a complaint received on Tuesday, an investigation revealed that a group of 22 people had come to Indore to beg. They were all staying in a hotel. The official mentioned, “This group consisted of 11 minor children and 11 women. They begged at various locations in the city during the day and returned to the hotel to sleep at night.”
Hotel, lodge operators instructed not to allow beggars to stay
The official added that the individuals in this group were counseled and sent back to their place of origin in Rajasthan. He also mentioned that all hotel, lodge, and accommodation operators in the city have been instructed not to allow beggars to stay, warning that legal action will be taken against those who do not comply.
The Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment has launched a pilot project aimed at making Indore and nine other cities in the country free from begging. The Indore administration has also imposed a ban on begging.
Rs 2.5 lakh earning in a month
Earlier this year, in February, during an initiative to make Indore free from beggars, a female beggar was caught who claimed to beg with her two children. She begged at the Lovekush intersection on Ujjain Road. She said that she earned Rs 2.5 lakh in just over a month from begging at the intersection and sent Rs 1 lakh to her in-laws. During questioning, the woman revealed that she possessed several properties, including land, a two-story house, a bike, and a smartphone worth Rs 20,000. She also mentioned that her home is in Rajasthan.
