Srinagar: Day after Jammu and Kashmir held its first Assembly elections in a decade, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to visit the Union Territory today to address a mega poll rally in Srinagar. The Prime Minister will campaign for BJP candidates contesting the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly polls.

The poll rally to be held at the Sher-e-Kashmir Park, Srinagar is expected to be attended by around 30,000 party workers, a party spokesperson said. Senior BJP leader Mohammad Anwar Khan has been designated as the in-charge for the rally, he added.

In view of the Prime Minister’s visit, elaborate security arrangements have been made with the deployment of heavy police forces in Srinagar, particularly around the venue, to ensure a peaceful and smooth conduct of the election rally.

J&K’s first Assembly polls in 10 years

Prime Minister Modi’s visit comes a day after polling for the first phase of Jammu and Kashmir elections was held in 24 Assembly constituencies spread across seven districts of the Union territory. The polling passed off peacefully without any untoward incidents except for reports of clashes between political workers in some areas. This is the first Assembly election in Jammu and Kashmir since the abrogation of Article 370 in 2019.

The second and third phases are on September 25 and October 1 while the counting of votes will be held on October 8. The BJP is contesting all 43 Assembly seats in the Jammu division while the party has fielded candidates in 19 constituencies out of the 47 seats in Kashmir.
