New Delhi: Lt Governor V K Saxena reportedly told Chief Minister Atishi that Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) was defeated in Assembly elections as they failed to fulfill the promise of cleaning river Yamuna in the national capital. Atishi, who visited Raj Bahwan to submit her resignation on Sunday, was told by Sexena that her government was cursed by ‘Yamuna Maiya’.
Atishi handed over her resignation to the LG on Sunday, a day after AAP faced a crushing defeat in the assembly polls. Atishi has been asked by Saxena to continue on the post till formation of a new government.
“Hon’ble Lt Governor, Shri VK Saxena today received the resignation of Hon’ble CM, Ms Atishi. He asked her to continue in her position till the formation of the new government,” Raj Niwas, Delhi posted from its official X handle.
The BJP won the Delhi polls with clear majority and is expected to stake claim to power next week after Prime Minister Narendra Modi returns from the US.
AAP govt cursed by ‘Yamuna Maiya’: LG to Atishi
According to multiple media reports quoting source at the Raj Bhawan, the LG reportedly told Atishi that he had already warned AAP government to work for public welfare issues, especially the Yamuna cleaning issue, but his advise was not followed and the part lost election as they were cursed by the river Yamuna.
Atishi, who has managed to retain her Kalkaji Assembly seat with a slim margin, took oath as the Delhi CM in September last year after AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal resigned from the post.
In the Delhi polls, for which results were declared on February 8, BJP returned to power after almost 25 years by winning 48 seats. The ruling AAP suffered a major defeat and was limited to only 28 seats against 62 seats in 2020.
AAP to play role of constructive Opposition: Atishi
On Sunday, Atishi said that the party’s MLAs will ensure the BJP does not discontinue the free services and welfare schemes that the AAP government provided in the past 10 years.
“AAP will play the role of a constructive opposition and ensure that the BJP pays Rs 2,500 per month to women by March 8 as promised by it, provides 300 units of free electricity and continues other facilities for the people,” PTI quoted Atishi.
