Beijing: In a remote area near Thailand-Myanmar border, a 22-year-old Chinese man, Liu Chuanyi, was rescued after being trapped in an abandoned well for three days.
Local villagers first heard strange cries from the nearby forest but did not investigate, believing the sounds to be supernatural. It wasn’t until rescue teams were dispatched to the area that Liu was found at the bottom of a 12-meter-deep well, as reported by Independent. Responding to the rescuers’ calls, he directed them to his location.
Man sustained serious injuries
The rescue operation took about 30 minutes and Liu was pulled out in a weakened state. He sustained several injuries, including a fractured wrist, a concussion and bruises. After being rescued, he was immediately taken to the hospital for medical care.
According to Liu, he conserved energy by calling for help once every hour during his ordeal, which helped him survive without food or water.
Villagers heard ‘ghostly’ cries
Villagers in the area had heard his cries earlier but avoided the forest at night, thinking the sounds were ghostly.
Authorities believe Liu accidentally fell into the well while trying to navigate his way out of the forest, as reported by NDTV. However, the reason for his presence near the Thailand-Myanmar border remains unclear. Immigration officials have been contacted to look into how he ended up in the area.
