Kolkata: A city court on Friday rejected the bail prayer of Sanjoy Roy, the prime accused in the rape and murder of a woman doctor inside the seminar room of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9, and remanded him to 14-day judicial custody till September 20.
Accused Roy, a civic volunteer, was produced before the court via video-conferencing.

Roy was arrested the next day after the incident by the Kolkata Police, which was initially investigating the case. The Calcutta High Court later transferred the case to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on a bunch of pleas seeking seeking a court-monitored investigation of the case as well as an investigation into the conduct of the hospital authorities, including the role of Sandip Ghosh, the then principal of the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, and other officials by a special team of investigating officers.
Accused Roy’s counsel sought grant of bail to him
CBI sources told news agency PTI that when the hearing of the case started before a Kolkata court on Friday, Roy started crying. His counsel, appointed by the state Legal Aid, urged the court for grant of bail for Roy, submitting that he was framed in the case and he has no link to the crime.

The CBI counsel opposed the bail prayer of accused Roy, submitting that his release would hamper the ongoing investigation.
The court, after hearing submissions, remanded Roy to 14-day judicial custody till September 20.
Apex court is scheduled to hear matter on September 9
The Supreme Court has taken suo motu cognisance of the rape and murder of the woman doctor and has sought the status report of the investigation from the CBI. The top court is scheduled to hear the matter on Monday (September 9).

The CBI is also investigating a case of alleged financial irregularities at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital during the tenure of Sandip Ghosh as principal of the institute on the orders of the High Court, which transferred the probe from from the Special Investigation Team (SIT), constituted by the state government of West Bengal, to the CBI on a plea by a former deputy superintendent of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.

Akhtar Ali, the former deputy superintendent of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, moved the High Court after the alleged rape and murder of the woman doctor inside the seminar room of the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9 sparked nationwide protests. Ali sought a probe into the alleged financial misconduct at the institute during Ghosh’s tenure by the Enforcement Directorate (ED).
Ghosh and three others have been arrested by the CBI in the alleged financial irregularities at the institute during his tenure.
