New Delhi: During a heated debate on Constitution in Lok Sabha, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi strongly criticized the PM Modi government, drawing parallels between its policies and the story of Eklavya from the Mahabharata. Rahul used the ancient tale of Eklavya to highlight how he believes the government is depriving marginalized groups of opportunities.
In his speech, Rahul Gandhi narrated the story of Eklavya, a Dalit youth who sought education from Guru Dronacharya but was denied because of his caste. When Eklavya later proved his abilities, Dronacharya demanded his thumb as a token, effectively taking away his future. Rahul likened this to how the government is allegedly “cutting off the thumbs” of backward classes, Dalits, and the youth through its policies.
Five major issues raised by Rahul Gandhi
Rahul Gandhi pointed to five areas where he believes the government is failing marginalized groups:
- Monopolies and industrialist Gautam Adani
Rahul accused the government of favoring industrialist Gautam Adani, giving him control over ports and airports. He argued that this creates monopolies, which harm competition and stifle opportunities for the youth. - Agniveer Scheme
The Congress leader criticized the Agniveer Yojana, claiming it lacks constitutional backing and deprives young people of long-term careers in the armed forces. According to him, this is akin to cutting off the thumbs of aspiring soldiers. - Lateral entry in government jobs
Rahul alleged that the government is bypassing traditional recruitment processes through lateral entry, which he said undermines the chances of OBC candidates in securing government jobs. - Dharavi redevelopment
Addressing the redevelopment of Dharavi, Rahul claimed that the government’s decision to hand over land to industrialists ignores the interests of the residents. He described it as another way of taking away people’s opportunities. - Paper leaks
Rahul raised concerns about the integrity of exams, stating that 70 papers were leaked under the Modi government’s tenure. This, he argued, directly impacts students’ futures, equating it to cutting off their thumbs.
Call for caste census and reservation expansion
Rahul Gandhi reiterated Congress’ demand for a caste census, asserting that knowing the demographics is crucial for ensuring social justice. He promised that if Congress comes to power, they will conduct a caste census and break the 50% cap on reservations within Parliament.
Rahul also targeted the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), Veer Savarkar, and Manusmriti. He accused the Sangh of praising Manusmriti, which he claimed oppresses marginalized groups, and criticized Savarkar for stating there was nothing Indian in the Constitution.
He questioned how the ruling party could claim to protect the Constitution while undermining its principles through such associations.
Rahul Gandhi emphasized the need to address caste disparities, protect the Constitution, and create policies that promote equality. His remarks sparked a sharp response from the ruling party, setting the stage for a contentious debate.
