New Delhi: Reeling from the fissures in the INDIA bloc in the wake of the humiliating defeat in the Maharashtra assembly elections, Congress is at the receiving end of another blow with the Sharad Pawar-led NCP joining other alliances partners by distancing itself from targeting the Centre over the Adani issue and stressing on utilising the Parliament’s time to discusses issues of farmers and youths.
The Congress’s INDIA bloc allies, including the Trinamool Congress (TMC), Shiv Sena (UBT), and Samajwadi Party (SP), too have stayed away from the issue, with only the Congress staging daily protests in Parliament. The TMC has openly stated that more pressing issues need attention than the probe into industrialist Gautam Adani, who has been accused of bribery by US authorities.
With the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and SP joining this stance, the Congress may face increasing pressure to shift its focus.
During Friday’s Lok Sabha debate on 75 years of the Constitution’s adoption, NCP (SP) MP from Shirur, Amol Kolhe, remarked, “The Constitution has placed Parliament at the core of our constitutional system. Unfortunately, it often becomes a political battleground, with frequent adjournments over personal remarks. Instead of focusing on relationships between political leaders and corporates, who travels on whose flights, or which foreign leader has made donations to whom, we should prioritise raising the voices of our farmers and youth. Discussions in Parliament must centre on national interests, not political slogans—a responsibility that both the government and the Opposition must take seriously.”
He also talked about how farmers should get the right price for their produce and youth must get better employment opportunities. Throughout the speech, NCP (SP) MP Supriya Sule, Sharad Pawar’s daughter, who was sitting beside Kolhe, indicated her approval of what Kolhe was saying.
