New Delhi: With less than a week remaining for campaigning to end for the Delhi assembly elections on February 5, a new battlefront has opened in the city. A day after former Delhi chief minister and AAP supremo Arvind Kejriwal alleged Haryana of mixing “poison” in the Yamuna river which he claimed could lead to “deaths”, Congress has approached the Election Commission by filing a formal complaint.
“BJP people in Haryana are mixing poison in the water and sending it to Delhi. If people in Delhi drink this water, many will die. Can anything be more disgusting than this? “The poison that is being mixed in the water cannot even be cleaned in water treatment plants. For the safety of the people of Delhi, the water supply has to be stopped in many areas,” Kejriwal had said in a post on social media platform X.
Congress demands investigation into Kejriwal’s allegations
The Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee (DPCC) has demanded an investigation into the allegations made by Kejriwal. In its letter to the ECI, the Congress has called for action on two fronts. First, if Kejriwal’s claims are found to be baseless, the party has demanded that an FIR be filed against him for spreading rumours during the election campaign. The Congress has argued that such behaviour constitutes a clear violation of the Model Code of Conduct and the Representation of the People Act, 1950.
The letter read, “The said statement is very sensitive in nature and should be dealt with seriously. If it is found that the Haryana Government has indeed been mixing poison into the Yamuna, then an FIR must be filed against them.”
Congress leader and party candidate from the New Delhi assembly constituency Sandeep Dikshit has written a letter to Delhi LG VK Saxena and police commissioner Sanjay Arora over Kejriwal remarks, urging them to take strict action against Kejriwal and Atishi.
“I am writing to you for strict and immediate action against Arvind Kejriwal who made shocking and irresponsible statements to the press yesterday alleging that Delhi’s water supply had been ‘poisoned’ and that the neighbouring state’s government had planned a ‘genocide’ against the people of Delhi,” reads the letter.
Atishi also writes letter to EC
Meanwhile, AAP has also approached the Election Commission with its grievances. Delhi chief minister Atishi has claimed that the water from Haryana flowing into Delhi’s Yamuna is contaminated with ammonia levels that have reached “toxic” thresholds.
“Ammonia levels continue to be 6 times above normal in Yamuna waters, at the point it is entering Delhi from Haryana. Such levels are extremely toxic for the human body. This water cannot be treated and supplied to people of Delhi. Otherwise their lives will be at risk. Have once again written to the Election Commission asking for their intervention, to prevent this toxic water from coming to Delhi. Have also asked to for an urgent appointment for the same,” she wrote on X.
