Congress also names new Bengal chief
Meanwhile on Saturday, the party replaced Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury with Subhankar Sarkar as its West Bengal unit president – he was serving as All India Congress Committee (AICC) secretary. He emphasized that the wishes of the people will be the most crucial factor in determining the future direction of the Congress party in the state.
In an official announcement, the party revealed that its president, Mallikarjun Kharge, has appointed Sarkar as the head of the West Bengal Pradesh Congress Committee effective immediately. The party acknowledged the contributions of the outgoing PCC president, Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury.
Who is Subhankar Sarkar?
Sarkar served as the AICC secretary, looking after Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, and Mizoram. Chowdhury resigned from his position as president of the West Bengal Pradesh Congress Committee after losing the 2024 Lok Sabha elections to TMC candidate Yusuf Pathan in Baharampur, where he had served five consecutive terms. The process of selecting a new state leader was initiated following his resignation.
The Congress leadership sought feedback from state officials regarding the importance of maintaining a balance in relationships with the Trinamool Congress at both national and state levels, as well as input on the new chief for the West Bengal unit.
The party has also appointed M K Bhardwaj and Bhanu Mahajan as acting working presidents of its Jammu and Kashmir unit.
