Dehradun: In a bizarre incident, a massive clash has unfolded at Dehradun railway station on Thursday night as members of two communities clashed with each other resulting in the pelting of stones and vandalism of vehicles. The police intervened and dispersed the crowd after stones were thrown and vehicles damaged.
Officials reported that the violence stemmed from an interfaith relationship between a young man and a woman from Badaun. Members of both communities gathered at the railway station upon learning of the couple’s presence. The situation quickly escalated, leading to objects being thrown and damage to parked trains.
Girl’s family filed a missing report in Badaun
According to the police, during interrogation it was revealed that a minor girl from Badaun district in Uttar Pradesh had come to Dehradun to meet her friend from a different community who works in Dehradun. Meanwhile, her family in Badaun filed a missing report and a police team has reached there based on her location.
“As far as we know, a minor girl from Badaun came to Dehradun to meet someone. A missing person’s report has already been filed in Badaun. The police informed the Government Railway Police (GRP) of her location and provided her details. However, the situation escalated, leading to a confrontation between Hindu and Muslim organizations, resulting in a ruckus and some stone pelting. The situation is now under control, and we have deployed a heavy police force in the area,” said Dehradun SSP Ajay Singh.
During interrogation, news got spread about this interfaith relationship
This couple, involving a minor girl, were engaged in “hot talks” after her arrival at Dehradun station which personnel of the Railway Protection Force and Government Railway Police at the scene got suspicious, said Senior Superintendent of Police Ajay Singh. While the police were gathering more information from the girl at the railway office, the news was spread that the episode involved an interfaith couple after which some people gathered at the station and engaged in an argument. The confrontation soon escalated and some people from the crowd pelted stones and vandalised some two-wheelers parked there.
The police promptly swung into action and dispersed the crowd
The local police arrived at the scene as soon as they were informed. In light of the unrest, a heavy police presence was deployed in and around the railway station, and Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Ajay Singh arrived at the location to manage the situation.
The SSP engaged with the agitated crowd and urged them to return home. Meanwhile, senior police officials confirmed that they will register cases at the Kotwali Nagar police station against those involved and launch a thorough probe in this matter. The police are also reviewing CCTV footage to identify the culprits responsible for the violence.
