New Delhi: The Delhi High Court on Friday slammed the Delhi Police and Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) over death of three civil services aspirants in a basement of a coaching centre following rain last week and transferred the probe to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), saying that it is time to relook at everything, as there is larger malaise in the national capital.
Acting Chief Justice Manmohan and Justice Tushar Rao Gedela, while hearing a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) seeking a probe by the high-level committee into the incident and a plea related to hundreds of libraries running in basements in the city, pulled up the Delhi Police for its approach of investigation into the matter and questioned it for not questioning the officials of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) on dis-functional storm water drain in and around the coaching institute – Rau’s IAS Study Circle and MCD officials for not informing the MCD commissioner about non-functioning storm water drains in the area.
The High Court once against raised questions on police arresting a passer by and not questioning the MCD officials and the Delhi Fire Service officials, who had just few days back visited the coaching premises and had given a certificate to the institute
“How a person who was passing on the road arrested? This is not fair. The maximum someone deserves in this situation is an apology. Police is respected when you arrest the culprit and leave the innocent. If you arrest the innocent and leave the guilty, it would be very sad,” the bench said and added, “You go to their office and seize the file. God knows what kind of interpolation may happen. Please, there is a lot of faith involved in the police. We are still not able to fathom, how children can drown.”
