Coaching institute deaths: Delhi court dismisses plea seeking access to premises

New Delhi: A Delhi court on Wednesday dismissed a plea of RAU’s IAS Study Circle seeking access to the premises in Old Rajendra Nagar where three civil services aspirants drowned in the coaching centre building’s basement on July 27.

Chief Judicial Magistrate Nishant Garg, who earlier reserved its order on the plea of the coaching centre after hearing arguments from the counsels appearing for the coaching centre and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), dismissed the plea of the coaching centre, which said that the premises were needed for the smooth running of classes.

What did the coaching centre submit?

The counsel representing Rau’s IAS Study Circle CEO Abhishek Gupta, while claiming that the CBI cannot prohibit access to the building, submitted before the court that access to the premises was required so that the students could continue their studies.

What did the CBI say?

The CBI counsel told the court that the basement of the building was supposed to be used for storage, however, it was being used as a library and the incident took place. It further said that the building has no safety measures and such an accident can happen again in the near future.

Three civil services aspirants drowned in coaching centre’s basement on July 27

Three civil services aspirants – Shreya Yadav, Tanya Soni, and Nevin Dalwin – drowned in the basement of the coaching centre after the basement was flooded following rain on the evening of July 27.

While Shreya Yadav hailed from Uttar Pradesh, Tanya Soni from Haryana and Nevin Dalwin was from Kerala and they were preparing for the civil services examination in the national capital.

The building of the coaching centre was later sealed.

Delhi High Court transferred probe of incident from Delhi Police to CBI

The investigation of the incident, which was initially being carried out by the Delhi Police, was transferred to the CBI by the Delhi High Court hearing a plea seeking investigation into the incident by a high-level committee.

The Delhi High Court, while transferring the probe to the central agency, raising questions on the direction of the probe into the incident by the Delhi Police. It raised questions on the arrest of an SUV driver by the Delhi Police and not questioning the officials from the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) and Delhi Fore Service (DFS).
