New Delhi: Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) is finalising a detailed project report for a new metro line extending from Koyambedu to Pattabiram via Avadi, scheduled for submission to the Tamil Nadu government in February.
The proposed 19-km network, estimated to cost around Rs 6,300 crore, aims to improve connectivity for residents in these suburban areas. CMRL officials confirmed ongoing soil testing and plans for a depot beyond Pattabiram, stating the project report is nearing completion.
“We have been doing soil tests. We plan to establish a depot a little beyond Pattabiram. We made an inspection of the site of the proposed depot two months ago. Most of the report is complete and we will finish it by February,” an official was quoted as saying by The Hindu.
The proposed route includes stations at Koyambedu, Padi Pudhu Nagar, Park Road, Vavin, Ambattur Estate Bus Stand, Dunlop, Ambattur Railway Station, Ambattur OT Bus Stand, Thirumullaivoyal, Avadi, and Pattabiram. Residents in these areas have expressed their eagerness for the metro extension, feeling overlooked while other parts of Chennai benefit from existing metro lines.
Meanwhile, CMRL has been recognized for its safety standards, receiving the “Suraksha Puraskar” (Safety Award) from the National Safety Council of India.
The award, a bronze trophy for third place, was given for the safe construction of the underground stretch between Light House and Bharathidasan Road stations, part of the Phase II project. CMRL highlighted that it’s the only metro project in India to receive this honour, emphasising its commitment to safety. The construction of this segment was undertaken by ITD Cementation India Limited.
