Chennai police warn of 3 years jail for sharing someone’s pics on social media without permission

Chennai: The GreaterChennai Police has warned that posting pictures of individuals on social media without permission will result in imprisonment of up to 3 years or a fine of up to Rs 3 lakh. “According to Section 66E of the Information Technology Act, posting pictures of an individual on social media without permission is punishable with imprisonment of up to 3 years or a fine of up to Rs 3 lakh. Respect privacy online!” the police said.

The police has also mentioned in its statement the helpline number for victims of cybercrime offenses to seek emergency help. “National Cybercrime Helpline Number 1930” Chennai Police has posted about this on its official X social media page. In this notification, the Chennai Police said that publishing personal information including photographs of others without permission will result in severe punishment and a fine of lakhs.
