Chennai: In a pioneering move, the Chennai Corporation is set to utilize Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) to deliver essential relief materials to flood-hit areas inaccessible by boats. A successful pilot test was conducted today from the Ripon Building, demonstrating the potential of drones to supply food, medicine, and other vital goods to stranded residents in heavily inundated areas.

The initiative aims to address the challenges faced during last year’s northeast monsoon, when floodwaters made it difficult for people to access essential goods. Minister KN Nehru visited and inspected the rehearsal at Ripon Building Complex, expressing optimism about the technology’s potential.
Chennai’s Drone Initiative: A Game-Changer in Flood Relief
Three drones, namely Garuda, Kothari, and Drago, have been readied for deployment. These drones are capable of carrying 5-10 kg of essential goods, including milk, bread, and pharmaceuticals, and have a range of 2 km in height and 40m flying distance.
Chennai, Kanchipuram, Chengalpattu, and Thiruvallur are expected to receive more rain today, and this technology could be a game-changer for flood relief efforts. The Chennai Corporation’s proactive approach is expected to ensure timely aid to stranded residents in hard-to-reach areas.
Mayor Priya, Deputy Mayor Mahesh Kumar, Commissioner J. Kumaraguruparan, and Additional Commissioner (Health) Dr. V. Jaya Chandra Bhanu Reddy were present during the test preview. The successful trial paves the way for the deployment of drones in flood relief operations, providing critical support to affected communities.
