‘Change it’: Dhankhar after Jaya Bachchan objects to being addressed “Jaya Amitabh Bachchan” again

New Delhi: Veteran Bollywood actress and Samajwadi Party MP Jaya Bachchan objected to being addressed by her husband actor Amitabh Bachchan’s name in the Parliament on July 29. In Monday’s Rajya Sabha session, she once again expressed her annoyance over it, calling it a “new drama” started in the House. In response, Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar told her it get it changed officially.

In a viral video, Dhankhar introduces the SP MP as ‘Smt Jaya Amitabh Bachchan’, which is her official name on her nomination papers, in the House. Irked by the address, she asked, “Sir, aapko Amitabh ka matlab pata hai na?”.

Dhankhar replied, “Ma’am, the name that appears in the election certificate is what is used. You can get it changed. There is a procedure to change the name that you have submitted for your election certificate. I had made use of the provision myself in 1989, and it is available for all the members. Please change it officially then.”

Later, Jaya clarified that she was very proud of her husband’s achievements and had no shame in being associated with him.

The SP MP also said why Union Minister Manohar Lal Khattar did not add his wife’s name after his. To this, Khattar quipped, “As for my wife’s name in front of mine… not in this birth (since Khattar is unmarried); for this, you will have to wait until the next birth.”

On July 29, Jaya Bachchan had shown similar annoyance when Deputy Chairman Harivansh Narayan Singh called out her name as “Jaya Amitabh Bachchan”. She had then sternly said, “Sir, only Jaya Bachchan would have been enough.”
