New Delhi: The Centre on Wednesday announced the appointment of Justice D Krishnakumar as the chief justice of the Manipur High Court.
Justice Siddharth Mridul, the incumbent chief justice of the Manipur High Court, will retire from the service on Thursday upon attaining the age of 62.
Law minister announced elevation of Justice Krishnakumar
Union Law minister Arjun Ram Meghwal announced the elevation of Justice Krishnakumar as the chief justice of the Manipur High Court and conveyed his best wishes to him.
“In exercise of the power conferred by the Constitution of India, the President of India, after consultation with the Chief Justice of India, is pleased to appoint Shri Justice D. Krishnakumar, Judge, Madras High Court as Chief Justice of the High Court of Manipur consequent upon the superannuation of Shri Justice Siddharth Mridul, present Chief Justice of the High Court of Manipur on 21.11.2024. I convey my best wishes to him,” the law minister wrote on social media platform X (formerly Twitter).
SC collegium on November 18 recommended name of Justice Krishnakumar
The Supreme Court collegium had on November 18 recommended to the Centre the name of Justice Krishnakumar for appointment as the chief justice of the Manipur High Court.
The Supreme Court collegium comprising Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna and Justices BR Gavai and Surya Kant had in its resolution had proposed to appoint Justice Krishnakumar, who is presently serving as a Judge of the Madras High Court, as the Chief Justice of the Manipur High Court with effect from the date on which the incumbent chief justice demits office on retirement.
“While recommending the name of Mr. Justice D. Krishnakumar, the collegium has also taken into consideration the fact that at present there is only one chief justice from the Madras High Court among the chief justices of the high courts,” the collegium said in its resolution and added, “Having regard to all relevant factors, the collegium is of the considered view that Mr. Justice D. Krishnakumar is fit and suitable in all respects for being appointed as the chief justice of High Court of Manipur.”
Justice Krishnakumar was appointed as a Judge of Madras High Court in 2016
Justice Krishnakumar was appointed as a Judge of the Madras High Court on April 7, 2016 and is due to retire on May 21, 2025. He is the senior-most puisne Judge in the Madras High Court and belongs to a Backward Community. Before his elevation as a Judge of the Madras High Court, he had extensive practice in civil, constitutional and service matters in the high court, with specialization in constitutional law.
