Mumbai: Maharashtra has reported two cases of the Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) with two children testing positive in Nagpur as per reports. However, the cases are yet to be confirmed by authorities with their blood samples being analysed.
The patients were a 13-year-old girl and a 7-year-old boy. Both of them developed symptoms of cough and fever following which blood tests conducted at a private lab detected the presence of the virus infections of which are witnessing a rise in India recently.
Neither the children nor their family members have any international travel history. They are currently recovering at home as their condition remains stable.
Government holds review meeting with states on HMPV cases
Union Health Secretary has reviewed the current status of the HMPV infections in the country and the public health measures being taken to manage them. There has been no increase in respiratory diseases in the country, and strict monitoring is ongoing to detect such cases.
States have been advised to raise public awareness regarding measures and precautions related to respiratory illnesses besides strengthening and reviewing ILI/SARI surveillance.
Health Secretary Poonya Salila Srivastava held a meeting with states/union territories regarding HMPV cases on Monday. The meeting reviewed the current situation of HMPV in India and the increasing cases of HMPV in China.
The health secretary also reiterated that respiratory diseases typically increase during the winter months. She further stated that the country is well-prepared for any potential increase in cases of respiratory diseases.

HMPV is a common respiratory virus that can cause infection in people of all ages, especially during the winter and early spring months. The viral infection is typically mild and self-limiting, with most cases recovering on their own.
