Calcutta High Court transfers probe into financial irregularities at RG Kar Medical College to CBI

Kolkata: The Calcutta High Court on Friday directed the Special Investigation Team (SIT), constituted by the West Bengal government, to hand over the case files related to the alleged financial irregularities at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital during the tenure of the former principal Sandip Ghosh to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) by 10:30 AM tomorrow.

Justice Rajarshi Bharadwaj directed the CBI to provide a progress report on the investigation into the alleged financial irregularities within three weeks.

CBI is also investigating rape, murder of a woman doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital

The CBI is also investigating the rape and murder of a thirty-one-year old postgraduate doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital and Ghosh has been questioned by the central agency in connection with the case.

High Court direction came on a plea by former deputy superintendent of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital

The High Court directed the transfer of the case while hearing a plea filed by Akhtar Ali, former deputy superintendent, RG Kar Medical College and Hospital seeking an investigation by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) into financial irregularities during Ghosh’s tenure as the principal of the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.

What did the former deputy superintendent of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital allege?

Ali in his plea alleged that he had made several complaints regarding financial irregularities during the tenure of Ghosh before the authorities of the West Bengal government, however, no action was taken against him and a SIT was constituted by the state government only after the death of the medical student.

Supreme Court took suo motu cognisance of rape, murder of woman doctor

A thirty-one year old postgraduate doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, Kolkata, who was on a thirty six hour duty shift, was murdered and allegedly raped inside the seminar room of the hospital on August 9, 2024. Following the incident at the hospital, agitations and protests were called by doctors’ associations, student bodies and civic groups across the country.

The Supreme Court has taken a suo motu cognisance of the incident. Hearing the matter on Thursday, the top court asked some tough questions from the counsels representing the state of West Bengal over delay in registration of the First Information Report (FIR) in the rape and murder of the woman doctor and questioned the sequence and timing of legal formalities conducted by the Kolkata Police.

Calcutta high Court earlier transferred probe to CBI

The Calcutta High Court earlier, while hearing a bunch of pleas seeking among other things a court-monitored investigation of the rape and murder of the woman doctor and the conduct of the hospital authorities, including the role of Ghosh, the then principal of the medical college, and other officials by a special team of investigating officers, transferred the probe to the CBI.
