Kolkata: The Border Security Force (BSF) on Wednesday foiled a major attempt by Bangladeshi nationals to enter Indian territory. Over 600 people tried to cross the Manikganj border, but BSF’s North Bengal Frontier unit sent them back to Bangladesh.
“A large group of Bangladesh nationals gathered in patches at various locations at the International Border along North Bengal in the evening. They were attempting to sneak into Indian territory. They were dispersed with the help of Border Guard Bangladesh, Civil Administration and BSF personnel, ” says a senior BSF officer.
Mohammad Yunus to lead Bangladesh’s interim government
This incident happened just one day before Nobel laureate Mohammad Yunus is set to become the head of Bangladesh’s interim government. The BSF acted quickly to maintain the security of India’s borders.
The attempt to cross the border comes amid political unrest in Bangladesh. Nobel laureate Mohammad Yunus will take over as interim government leader on Thursday. Yunus has called for peace and calm, urging people to avoid violence and focus on rebuilding the nation.
Sheikh Hasina’s resignation
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned after violent anti-government protests led by the Students Against Discrimination movement. The protests have resulted in many deaths and widespread unrest. Since July, at least 469 people have died, including 29 supporters of Hasina’s Awami League party.
Army Chief General Waker-Uz-Zaman announced that Yunus and his 15-member advisory council will be sworn in at 8 pm on Thursday. The army has promised to support the interim government to restore law and order.
Businesses in Bangladesh are worried about their safety due to the ongoing unrest. The Daily Star newspaper reported that garment factories and other businesses, which reopened on Wednesday, are struggling to operate because of fears of attacks and vandalism.
The law and order situation in Bangladesh is unstable. The police have been described as “totally dysfunctional” by the Army chief. Attacks on police stations and other facilities have led to many casualties among law enforcement personnel.
