Kanpur: A bizarre incident unfolded in Barra, Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, when a bride called off her wedding shortly after the garland ceremony. Despite persistent efforts from relatives to change her mind, she stood firm on her decision. The situation eventually escalated to the police, but no resolution was reached. The two families began blaming each other and ultimately the groom’s procession left the venue without the bride.
The incident started when a marriage was arranged between a man from Barra and a woman from Mandhana and the wedding set for November 24. The bride’s family had booked the Vaishnavi Guest House in Barra Jarauli for the ceremony.
The wedding procession arrived in high spirits and after the traditional garland exchange (jaimala), preparations for the seven rounds were about to begin. At that moment, the groom secretly slipped away, got into a car and started drinking alcohol with a woman who is believed to be a member of an orchestra.
Bride calls off wedding after groom caught drinking
The bride’s brother noticed the groom drinking and rushed to inform his sister. Upon learning of the groom’s actions, the bride became furious and made it clear that she would not go through with the marriage. Despite attempts by relatives to convince her, the bride remained resolute. Tensions quickly escalated and a dispute broke out between both sides at the guest house. Then the police were informed.
The groom’s family accused the bride’s side of stealing jewellery worth lakhs of rupees, which had been part of the marriage gifts. In response, the bride’s family accused the groom of being an alcoholic and claimed they had been misled during the marriage arrangement.
Police intervene, but no formal complaints filed
The police, led by Inspector Rajesh Sharma from Barra Police Station, intervened and facilitated a compromise between both families. However, no formal complaints were filed. Both families eventually returned to their respective homes, with the bride’s family heading back to Mandhana and the groom’s family returning home without the bride.
