Bareilly: A shocking incident has come to light in Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh, where a head constable has been accused of replacing original bribe notes with fake ones during a court case.
The officer claimed that the original notes had been chewed by rats, leading to a criminal case being registered against him.
Constable gives different notes
According to police officials, the matter involves head constable Udayveer Singh from Nawabganj police station. The incident dates back to February 12, 2021, when the Anti-Corruption Organization (ACO) arrested a revenue officer (Lekhpal) in Nawabganj Tehsil while accepting a bribe of Rs 10,000.
The ACO team confiscated 20 Rs 500 notes, a mobile phone, an Aadhaar card, and a PAN card from the accused officer. These items, including the bribe amount, were handed over to Udayveer Singh for safekeeping at the police station.
Court’s order
While the court later ordered the return of some seized items, the bribe notes were supposed to be retained as evidence. However, during the trial, Singh presented 20 different rs 500 notes in court, claiming that the original notes had been destroyed by rats at the police station.
An investigation led by superintendent of police (city) Manush Parikh revealed that Singh had intentionally replaced the original notes to benefit the accused officer. The inquiry concluded that Singh’s actions constituted a deliberate criminal act.
Following these findings, additional superintendent of police Mukesh Chandra Mishra confirmed that an FIR was filed against Singh on Saturday.
