New Delhi: An explosion occurred near the CRPF school in Prashant Vihar in Delhi’s Rohini at 7.47 am on Sunday. The blast caused damage to the school’s wall, shattered windows of nearby cars, and damaged shop signboards. No casualties or serious injuries have been reported.
What we know so far about the incident
- Local police were informed of the explosion via a PCR call. Upon arrival, they found the school’s wall damaged and a foul smell in the air. Teams from the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL), the bomb disposal squad, and the Delhi Police special cell were immediately dispatched to the scene. The area has been cordoned off, and investigations are ongoing.
- Local residents reported hearing a loud explosion, followed by a cloud of smoke rising from the site. One eyewitness recorded a video of the smoke, but no further details have emerged from residents.
- Police and forensic experts are examining the scene to determine the cause of the blast. Authorities are investigating a possible connection to a crude bomb, though no concrete evidence has been found yet. A suspicious white powder-like residue was discovered at the site and is being sent for forensic analysis. An FIR has been registered under the Explosives Act, and the case is expected to be handed over to the special cell.
- Teams from the National Security Guard (NSG), National Investigation Agency (NIA), and CRPF have been informed and are part of the ongoing investigation. The NIA has been on-site collecting inputs and evidence.
- There were prior intelligence reports of a possible terrorist conspiracy during the festival season in Delhi. Local police had been on high alert following these inputs. Given the nature of the incident, authorities are not ruling out the possibility of a larger conspiracy.
- Police are analysing mobile tower data from the area and reviewing CCTV footage to trace any suspicious activities or individuals near the blast site. Delhi has been placed on high alert, with heightened security in markets and public places.
- This is the first explosion in Delhi in 13 years since the 2011 blasts. In 2022, an IED was found in the Ghazipur flower market, though no blast occurred.
