New Delhi: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has launched a campaign against what it claims is excessive noise pollution from loudspeakers at mosques in Mumbai. The party plans to file police complaints against mosques exceeding permissible noise levels, citing a recent Bombay High Court order.
A BJP delegation from Bhandup recently met with Bhandup police station officials, raising concerns about loudspeakers used at mosques in Sonapur and Nahur Road. They objected to the alleged continuous use of loudspeakers from 6 AM to 10 PM, permitted through monthly renewals, arguing that the volume violates noise pollution regulations and disturbs residents.

The BJP demanded immediate action from the police and the Pollution Control Board against these mosques. They invoked a Bombay High Court ruling that directs police to address noise level complaints against mosques, including issuing warnings, imposing fines, and seizing loudspeakers in case of repeated violations.
BJP leader Kirit Somaiya brought attention to alleged noise pollution from mosques on the Bhandup-Mulund Link Road. He filed complaints with the Bhandup police station and the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board.
Somaiya’s complaint to the Bhandup police, shared on Twitter, cites complaints from residents near Runwal Green Residential Complex regarding loudspeakers at a nearby mosque. His complaint to the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board similarly alleges excessive noise levels and questions whether necessary permissions have been obtained and regulations are being followed.
The High Court’s order mandates a warning upon receiving a noise pollution complaint, followed by a fine of Rs 5,000 for subsequent offences, and confiscation of the loudspeaker for further violations. The court also directed that the complainant’s identity should remain confidential.
