Patna: On the occasion of Jal-Jeevan-Hariyali Diwas, a discussion on “Promotion of Solar Energy Utilization & Energy Conservation” was organized at Vidyut Bhawan, Patna. Addressing the event, Energy Secretary Shri Pankaj Kumar Pal emphasized the need to enhance reliance on renewable energy as an alternative to fossil fuels. He highlighted that 23% of Bihar’s total peak demand of 8005 MW is currently met through renewable energy and efforts are underway to further increase this share.
Shri Pal noted significant progress in green energy initiatives over the past five years, including solar installations on 11,000+ government buildings, generating over 100 MW of solar power. He also mentioned successful models like ‘Niche Machli, Upar Bijli’ with 1.6 MW solar power in Darbhanga and 525 kW in Supaul. A 301 MW solar battery storage system is being developed in Kajra, Lakhisarai, first phase set for completion in July 2025. Additionally, under the Mukhyamantri Solar Street Light Yojana, more than 5.5 lakh solar street lights have been installed across Bihar.
Highlighting the Jal-Jeevan-Hariyali Mission, Shri Pal credited Chief Minister’s visionary leadership in tackling climate change, promoting energy efficiency and transitioning to renewable sources like solar, wind, and hydro energy. He also stressed the importance of consumer awareness in reducing energy consumption.
Mission Director Smt Pratibha Rani stated that 15 departments are working together under the Jal-Jeevan-Hariyali Mission, leading to notable improvements in forest cover and environmental sustainability.
The event saw participation from senior officials, including directors from NBPDCL and BSPGCL, Chief Engineer (Generation) and representatives from the Building Construction & Agriculture departments.
