Bhandara: A major explosion took place at an ordnance factory in Jawahar Nagar, Bhandara district, Maharashtra, killing five people. The incident took place at 11 am on Friday. Authorities fear the death toll may rise as several people have sustained critical injuries. Rescue operations are underway.
The ordnance factory produces single-base and double-base propellants as well as high explosives. These materials are used in military applications, including rockets, grenades and ballistic missiles. The blast reportedly took place in C Section 23 building of the factory, creating panic among the workers and nearby residents who reported hearing the explosion up to 5 km away.
What are single-base and double-base propellants?
The factory is a manufacturer of propellants, which are key components in various types of weaponry and propulsion systems. A single-base propellant primarily contains nitrocellulose, an explosive material that serves as a fuel. These are used in small arms, cannons, and grenades due to their reliability and effectiveness.
A double-base propellant, also known as ballistite, is a more advanced explosive material containing a combination of nitroglycerin and nitrocellulose. This mixture increases the energy output and makes it suitable for use in ballistic missiles and other military applications. Additionally, double-base (DB) rocket propellants are solid explosives containing both fuel and oxidizer, allowing them to provide consistent propulsion in applications like rockets and missiles.
The production and handling of such materials require stringent safety measures as they are highly volatile and prone to accidents if not managed properly.
Details of the accident
Following the explosion, the factory was engulfed in chaos. All workers were evacuated to ensure their safety. However, the intense flames and the force of the blast resulted in severe injuries and fatalities.
According to reports, the faces of the deceased were badly burned, making identification difficult. Those injured have been admitted to a local hospital for treatment, where their condition remains critical.
Eyewitnesses reported hearing a deafening sound and seeing flames rising from the factory premises. The impact of the blast was so severe that it was felt several kilometers away. Local residents rushed to the site, but the authorities quickly cordoned off the area to manage the situation.
