Belagavi (Karnataka): Belagavi is preparing to host the “Gandhi Bharat” event on Tuesday, commemorating the 100th anniversary of the only Congress session presided over by Mahatma Gandhi in the city in 1924.
The event, themed “Jai Bapu, Jai Bhim, Jai Samvidhan,” is aimed to reaffirm the Congress party’s commitment to Gandhian ideology and the Indian Constitution.
Key figures attending the event include Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, Lok Sabha Opposition Leader Rahul Gandhi, Wayanad MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and other senior party leaders. Over 60 national-level leaders, MPs and CWC members are expected to participate, along with state ministers and MLAs, as confirmed by Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister and state Congress president DK Shivakumar.
“More than 60 national level leaders, MPs, CWC members and others are attending the convention. The ministers and MLAs will also participate in the convention,” Shivakumar told reporters.
The focus on the Constitution and its architect, B.R. Ambedkar, is seen as a strategic move to target Union Home Minister Amit Shah, whom the Congress has accused of insulting Ambedkar in the Rajya Sabha.
The schedule includes the unveiling of a grand Mahatma Gandhi statue at the Suvarna Vidhana Soudha by Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday morning, followed by a public meeting at the CPED Grounds in the afternoon, Congress sources said.
Originally planned for December 27th as part of a two-day program, the event was postponed due to the passing of former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. The first day’s events took place on December 26th, with the second day now rescheduled for Tuesday.
The state government has made extensive security measures for the arrival of the VVIPs.
