New Delhi: Rahul Gandhi’s remarks in the US about religious freedom in India, specifically referring to Sikhs, have sparked widespread protests from the Sikh community.
Meanwhile, BJP leader Tarvinder Singh Marwah, has allegedly threatened Rahul Gandhi during a protest in Delhi.
What Rahul Gandhi said in US?
During an event in Virginia, USA, Rahul Gandhi spoke about the issue of religious freedom in India. While addressing the crowd, he highlighted the challenges faced by different religious communities in India, including Sikhs.
Rahul Gandhi said, “First of all, you have to understand what the fight is about, the fight is not about politics, not only for Sikhs, but for all religions. The fight is about whether a Sikh will be allowed to wear a turban and go to the Gurudwara.”
This statement caused outrage among many Sikhs. In response, protests erupted, with some members of the Sikh community taking to the streets in Delhi. The protest turned tense near Janpath Road as some protesters attempted to break police barricades.
BJP leader’s threat
Among the protesters was BJP leader and former MLA Tarvinder Singh Marwah, who made a controversial and threatening remark directed at Rahul Gandhi. Marwah said, “Rahul Gandhi, you better behave, otherwise in the coming times, you will also face the same fate as your grandmother.”
Rahul Gandhi’s grandmother, former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, was assassinated in 1984 by her Sikh bodyguards following Operation Blue Star, an attack on the Golden Temple in Amritsar.
Congress demands action
In response to this threat, Congress shared the video of Marwah’s statement on X and demanded action from the government. Congress spokesperson Supriya Shrinet posted the video, tagging Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah and JP Nadda.
