New Delhi: PM Jan Arogya Yojana for senior citizens was announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi earlier this year with an eye on wellness and healthcare coverage for senior citizens. Moreover, this will now open the doors for healthcare coverage for senior citizens aged 70 years and above.
The eligible individuals will receive health coverage to the tune of Rs 5 lakh under PMJAY. Nearly 6 crore individuals from 4.5 crore households are expected to benefit from this initiative.

How to register for PMJAY
- Senior citizens can visit the PMJAY portal or the Ayushman app.
- Ayushman cardholders must sign up again on the website or the app.
- Complete eKYC to apply for a new card.
PMJAY eligibility criteria
PMJAY for those aged 70 years and above will be implemented in 33 states and Union territories. However, Delhi, Odisha and West Bengal will be not be part of this drive. Senior citizens from PMJAY-covered families are eligible for additional coverage of up to Rs 5 lakh. PMJAY beneficiaries aged 70 years and above must not be covered under CGHS, ECHS, or CAPF. However, privately insured and ESIC covered senior citizens will be eligible for PMJAY cover.
Senior citizens aged 70 years and above will receive coverage irrespective of their social status, according to the scheme document. To be sure, PMJAY beneficiaries below this age threshold are required to adhere to certain rules such as income less than Rs 2.5 lakh per annum.
What is PMJAY?
PMJAY was launched by the Modi government as the world’s largest healthcare scheme offering up to Rs 5 lakh cover to 55 crore persons from over 12 crore families. So far, PMJAY has covered 7.37 lakh hospital admissions. Out of these 49 per cent of beneficiaries have been women, according to the official website.
