New Delhi: In a major breakthrough, researchers at Patanjali Research Institute have found that Ayurveda may offer an effective treatment for sepsis, a life-threatening infection that causes the immune system to overreact and damage various organs. The findings, published in the academic journal Biomedicine and Pharmacotherapy, suggest that phytoconstituents derived from plants could help manage sepsis and prevent related complications such as acute kidney injury.
The research explains that during sepsis, inflammation and oxidative stress can damage kidney cells. As a result, reduced blood flow can impact kidney oxygenation and nourishment. Phytoconstituents — compounds derived from plants — may help control kidney disease caused by sepsis.
Phytoconstituents can help reduce inflammation and oxidative stress. This study has carried out detailed research on the pathophysiology of sepsis, biomarkers, and the role of phytoconstituents.
Ayurveda can help control Sepsis
The research states that various types of Ayurvedic medicines and herbs can help control sepsis. It mentions ingredients such as ginger and quercetin, known for their powerful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, which could be useful in the treatment of sepsis.
According to the research, phytoconstituents such as curcumin, resveratrol, baicalin, quercetin, and polydatin can prevent infections and diseases related to the kidneys caused by sepsis. They can also help in preventing acute kidney injury associated with sepsis.
Measures to protect kidneys
The research suggests some measures to protect the kidneys during sepsis. For example, the use of nephrotoxic drugs should be undertaken with caution and only when absolutely necessary. According to the study, protocolised fluid resuscitation plays a crucial role in the treatment of sepsis. In some cases, the use of vasopressors is recommended for treating sepsis, but they can sometimes worsen kidney injury, hence must be used carefully.
Future direction
Phytoconstituents could be developed as pharmaceutical drugs to prevent kidney injury caused by sepsis. The research highlights that phytoconstituents have little to no side effects.
