New Delhi: The Marathahalli police has registered a First Information Report (FIR) against four people, including AI engineer Atul Subhash’s estranged wife, Nikita Singhania, on charges of abetment to suicide. The three others mentioned in the FIR are Nikita’s mother, Nisha Singhania, brother Anurag Singhania and uncle Sushil Singhania.
The complaint in the case was filed by Atul’s brother, Bikas Kumar on Wednesday. The FIR cites sections 108 and 3(5) of the new Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), the Indian penal code. Section 108 addresses the abetment of suicide, while section 3(5) pertains to multiple individuals acting with a common intention to commit a crime, news agency ANI reported.
Kumar’s complaint alleges that Nikita and her family fabricated false cases against Atul, demanding a Rs 3 crore settlement. In his complaint, he stressed the immense stress placed upon his brother due to the relentless legal battles and the difficulties involved in navigating the legal system while working in Bengaluru and having family in Janunpur, Uttar Pradesh. “My brother gave his life while he was fighting against the system,” he said.
Following Atul’s suicide on Monday, a 24-page suicide note and a nearly 90-minute video detailing his allegations of relentless harassment by his wife and her family was found. In his note and video, Atul described a series of false accusations, including claims of murder and unnatural sexual behaviour, levied against him by his wife’s family, who also demanded Rs 2 lakh per month in maintenance.
He recounted an instance in court where his wife allegedly taunted him, suggesting he should commit suicide. He described feeling trapped, stating that the money he earned to support his family was instead being used to fuel the legal battles against him. He expressed fear that his child would be alienated and further legal action would be taken against him and his family.
“Instead of using it for our child’s welfare, she is weaponising it against us.” He further said, “I feel that I should kill myself because the money I earn is making my enemies stronger. That same money will be used to destroy me, and this cycle will keep going.”
