Assam govt to bring bill against ‘love Jihad’, proposes life imprisonment

New Delhi: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that his government will soon introduce a law providing for life imprisonment in cases of ‘love jihad’. Sarma made this statement while addressing BJP leaders at the state BJP executive meeting in Guwahati on Sunday. He said that a bill will be introduced in the assembly soon and a law will be enacted accordingly.

New domicile policy

CM Sarma also revealed plans to introduce a new domicile policy in Assam, where only natives of the state will be eligible for government employment, according to PTI. He reiterated the state government’s pre-election promise to prioritise job opportunities for Assam’s residents. As part of this commitment, the government aims to provide employment to one lakh people, as previously pledged. He assured that a detailed list will be released soon, providing further clarity on the initiative.

The chief minister announced that the Assam government has made a decision concerning land transactions between Muslims and Hindus. Earlier this week, Sarma said that the government plans to eliminate VIP culture and ensure that only satvik and vegetarian food will be provided at all government events.

Aadhaar cards for newborns

Sarma also announced the launch of a pilot project to issue Aadhaar cards to newborns alongside their birth certificates in 13 district medical colleges across the state. The initiative aims to provide Aadhaar cards to infants within a few days of birth, eliminating the need for their relatives to queue up for the document. Initially, the project will be implemented in district medical colleges, with plans to expand it statewide, ensuring that children receive their Aadhaar cards at birth.

He said that the Assam government has launched a new initiative to support youth below the poverty line by providing them with a grant of two lakh rupees to start their own businesses. Interviews for the scheme will take place in various districts from August 16 to September 5. The funds will be distributed by September 30.
