New Delhi: The investigation into the death of a PGT doctor at R G Kar Medical College continues to deepen, with the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) now focused on the timeline surrounding the incident and the whereabouts of former principal Sandip Ghosh.
Ghosh, who has maintained a consistent narrative for the past 18 days, claims he was unaware of the doctor’s death until 10:20 am on August 9th, almost 50 minutes after a student found her body in the seminar hall and 10 minutes after police were alerted.
His account, however, has raised several questions for investigators. Notably, Ghosh claims to have received a call from associate professor Sumit Roy Tapadar at 10 am but was unable to answer due to being in the shower. He says he called Tapadar back around 10:20 am, only then learning of the doctor’s death.
Ghosh insists he immediately rushed to the hospital, calling the hospital’s MSVP, the Rogi Kalyan Samiti chairman, and the chest medicine HoD on the way. However, only the OC of Tala police station responded, informing Ghosh that he was already aware of the incident.
Adding to the mystery, several people not affiliated with R G Kar but known to Ghosh were present at the hospital that day, arriving even before the victim’s parents were informed. The CBI is investigating who alerted these individuals and who instructed the caller to claim the doctor’s death was a “suicide”.
The others that Ghosh had dialled were MSVP Sanjay Vasisht, Rogi Kalyan Samiti chairman Sudipto Roy and chest medicine HoD Arunabha Dutta Chowdhury. Ghosh claimed he had asked the OC to secure the incident spot. According to the former principal, he had reached the hospital around 11 am.
The CBI is also investigating Ghosh’s absence when police first arrived at the hospital and are studying his call details. The agency is interviewing the hospital administrative officer and may conduct further polygraph tests.
With the primary suspect, Sanjay Roy, refusing to divulge information about the involvement of administrators, the CBI is expanding its investigation to include security guards on duty on the morning of August 9th. Two guards have already undergone polygraph tests.
