New Delhi: Former Delhi Chief Minister and AAP national convener Arvind Kejriwal on Friday raised concerns over the quality of Yamuna water coming into the city, alleging that Haryana’s Chief Minister, Nayab Singh Saini, is responsible for sending contaminated water to Delhi. According to Kejriwal, this action was an attempt to create an artificial water crisis in the capital.
Kejriwal said, “Atishi and Bhagwant Mann wrote a letter to the Election Commission (EC) raising the issue and asking them to step in. However, the EC did not take any action. Instead, I was served with a notice for raising my voice. I prevented a water crisis from happening in Delhi.”
Arvind Kejriwal’s accusations against Haryana CM
Kejriwal further accused Haryana’s Chief Minister of committing a crime by sending polluted water to Delhi, calling for the registration of a FIR against him. He stated, “Haryana CM Nayab Singh Saini has committed a crime by sending poisonous water to Delhi and trying to create an artificial water crisis in Delhi. An FIR should be registered against him.”
The issue was raised by Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leaders Atishi and Bhagwant Mann, who had earlier written to the Election Commission, urging it to investigate the situation. Kejriwal expressed his frustration that instead of taking action, he had been issued a notice for speaking out. He added, “If the EC does not take action, this move will prove to be catastrophic, especially during elections.”
To demonstrate the severity of the contamination, Kejriwal said that he would be delivering three bottles of Yamuna water containing 7 parts per million (ppm) of ammonia to the Election Commission. He challenged the EC to drink the water in front of the country, as proof of its harmful quality. He said, “We are taking three bottles of Yamuna water with 7 ppm ammonia and handing it over to them. We challenge them to drink that water in front of the country.”
Kejriwal further criticized Election Commission for not taking any action against the Haryana CM. After submitting his reply to the EC’s second notice regarding the issue, Kejriwal said, “The Chief Election Commissioner did not pass any orders directing Haryana CM to stop polluting Delhi’s waters right before elections. Rather, it chose to hound me.”
EC accepts manner of meeting with Kejriwal as special case
In response to Kejriwal’s complaints, the Election Commission decided to meet with him on Friday. The EC made a special arrangement to hear his concerns, ensuring that all stakeholders could voice their issues without complaint. Sources from the Election Commission said that they gave a patient hearing to Kejriwal’s accusations regarding the poisoning of the water, which he described as a potential “mass genocide.”
AAP MP Sanjay Singh, who supported Kejriwal’s claims, said, “Arvind Kejriwal has told the entire chronology about the BJP’s conspiracy to poison the water coming to Delhi to the Election Commission. The Commission has said that it will investigate the entire matter with facts and then make some decision.”
