Heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning battered Anantapur district of Andhra Pradesh on Monday night submerging the district under water, Tv9 telugu reported.
Pandameru river adjacent to Anantapur city overflowed, flooding nearby colonies and submerging entire residential areas, washing away autos and cars. Citizens had to take refuge on rooftops while they awaited rescue. Government officials began rescue operations and evacuated people to safer locations.
Hyderabad-Bangalore national highway flooded:
The Muktapuram pond in Kanaganapalli mandal burst and overflowed, leading to the flooding of Hyderabad-Bangalore National Highway bringing traffic to a standstill. A breach in Kanaganapalle canal made things worse and intensified flow of water into Pandameru river. Chitravathi river is also overflowing at Puttaparthi due to last night’s rains.
Emergency teams are on the ground and are working to clear the highway of traffic.
In Sathya Sai district, Kanaganapalle mandal received the highest amount of rainfall with 198.2 mm followed by Ramagiri which recorded 98.4 mm, Chenne Kothapalle recorded 95.4 mm, Penu Konda received 89.8 mm, Kotha Cheruvu received 88.2 mm, Hindupur recorded 83.2mm among others.
