New Delhi: It is bizarre and ironic at once.
As the cops laid out seized liquor bottles on the floor to be smashed by a bulldozer, hordes of men quickly gathered there, swooped in and took away their share of the booze. As they did so, the cops tried to prevent them but in vain.
The incident occurred in Guntur, nearly 40 km from Andhra Pradesh’s capital Amaravati. Its video, which surfaced on Tuesday, has gone viral on social media platforms.
The policemen were preparing to destroy the seized liquor, amounting to Rs 50 lakh, at a dumping yard on Etukuru Road. As the procedure was all set to start, a frenzied crowd appeared from nowhere on the scene, disrupted the exercise and started to flee with several bottles. The scramble for the bottles was so sudden that the police didn’t know how to react.

In the video, it can be seen that the cops catch hold of a few but they give the police a slip. One of them is stopped by a policeman, but it doesn’t deter the others. Another is caught but then escapes. The mad rush continues.
An investigation has been launched into the incident to find out who were these men and how they came to know about the confiscated liquor.
The incident speaks volumes about the challenges the cops face in destroying seized illicit items in public areas.
