New Delhi: Hours after security forces eliminated five Hizbul Mujahideen terrorists in Kulgam, Union Home Minister Amit Shah held a high-level meeting in the national capital to review the security situation in Jammu and Kashmir. Among the terrorists who were killed included Hizbul Mujahideen commander Farooq Ahmad Bhat alias Nali.
Notably, it was Shah’s first meeting to review the security situation in the Union Territory after the Assembly Polls in Jammu and Kashmir. Among those who also took part in the meeting were J&K Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha and top officers of the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), Army, paramilitary forces, and intelligence agencies.
Number of terrorist attacks increased in recent times
Earlier in 2019, after the abrogation of Article 370 and the bifurcation of the then-state into two Union Territories, the law and order of Jammu and Kashmir came under the control of the central government. During the meeting, the minister had a detailed discussion on the security roadmap for next year.
In recent times, the number of terrorist attacks has increased in the region. On October 20, at least seven people were killed in a terror attack in Kashmir. There had also been several attacks on outsiders working in the Valley. As per the PTI report, Amit Shah was expected to take note of the recent terror incidents in the valley and the possible steps which could be taken to control such incidents.
Around 45 terrorists killed this year so far: Official data
According to official data, a total of 142 terrorists were killed in the Union Territory in 2019. Around 45 were killed so far this year. While 50 civilians were killed in 2019, the figure stood at 14 in the first week of November in 2024.
