New Delhi: In a major operation, an Al Qaeda-inspired terror module was busted by the Delhi Police on Thursday. As many as 14 persons linked to the module were taken into custody across Jharkhand, Rajasthan, and Uttar Pradesh following the massive crackdown. The joint operation was carried out by the Delhi Police’s Special Cell, the Anti-Terrorism Squad in Jharkhand, and state police forces in Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh. It was launched after critical intelligence inputs, which brought to the fore the module’s intentions and locations.
Police sources claim that the group behind the module was planning to carry out a series of terror activities aimed at setting up a ‘Khilafat’ within India.
“The module was being spearheaded by one Dr Ishtiyaq of Ranchi (Jharkhand), and it was aiming to declare ‘khilafat’ and orchestrate serious terrorist activities within the country,” a Delhi Police statement pointed out. The group’s members underwent indoctrination and weapons training at multiple locations.
According to reports, six individuals were arrested from Bhiwadi, Rajasthan, as they were participating in weapons training. Besides, around eight suspects were nabbed from Jharkhand and Uttar Pradesh for further questioning. The police have found various arms, ammunition, and literature linked to terrorist activities from the locations.
The Delhi Police said that investigations are underway and more arrests are likely to be made.
