New Delhi: Air India has cancelled all its flights to and from Mauritius due to restricted operations due to Cyclone Garance in the country. Sharing a message, it said that steps are being taken to minimise the inconvenience caused to passengers because of the disruption.
Taking to X, it wrote, “Air India flights to and from Mauritius of 28 February 2025 have been cancelled due to restriction of operations at Mauritius Airport caused by Cyclone Garance. Every effort is being made to minimise the inconvenience caused to passengers due to this unforeseen disruption.”
‘Alternative arrangements have been made to fly passengers’
It added, “Alternative arrangements have been made to fly the passengers to their destinations once flight operations resume. Air India accords top priority to the safety and wellbeing of its passengers and crew.” The country was placed on high alert last Thursday, resulting in serious threat to famous tourist destinations.
The Mauritius Government earlier classified Garance as a class 3 cyclone, which is considered as the second-highest alert level, as the wind gusts was expected to reach speeds of 70 kilometres per hour. The cyclone which was earlier located 310 kilometres (190 miles) northwest of the island had intensified into an “intense tropical storm.”
Cyclone was expected to pass within 50 kilometres of La Reunion
As per officials, the cyclone was expected to pass within 50 kilometres of La Reunion between Thursday evening and Friday morning, the prefecture had said in a statement earlier. The Meteo-France had earlier warned that there could still be a “direct impact” on La Reunion. The department had also warned of gusts of over 150 kph on the island’s highest points, accompanied by heavy rain and rough seas. While there were heavy clouds over La Reunion on Thursday, there was no significant rainfall. Thousands of people were seen shopping for basic goods in La Reunion before the expected lockdown, forming long queues in shops.
